The lockdown browser locks all windows while allowing video conferencing tools to run for proctoring in the background. With the increased use of generative AI, we now require lockdown browsers to be installed and for the students to be proctored to ensure test security and accurate student results.
Please note that within the testing platform, the lockdown browser is referred to as "kiosk".
Installing the secure lockdown browser:

There are two options for Mac: Silicon and Intel. The download you select depends on what processor your Mac has. Click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select "About This Mac". On the Overview tab, look for the line that indicates either Chip or Processor. If the line contains M1 or M2, your Mac is running Apple Silicon. If the line contains Intel, your Mac is running an Intel-based processor.
Please complete the installation instructions as prompted (also outlined below). CAE recommends downloading and testing the lockdown browser at least 48 hours before administering the exam to allow time for troubleshooting if needed.
Once you have selected the button for the desired download type:
- Install package should begin downloading within seconds.
- When it is finished downloading, select the download and follow the instructions. If you encounter issues here, please see the below troubleshooting advice, or contact support@cae.org.
- Your device may ask you if you would like to allow ADAM to make changes to your device. If so, select Yes.
- After the installation is complete, click on the ADAM icon (which appears as an “A” with a green checkmark behind it, below) to launch the application and test computer compatibility.
Troubleshooting Lockdown Browser Installation:
If students are having difficulties downloading the lockdown browser, please email support@cae.org describing the issue with as much detail as possible, including the student's hardware device (Mac, PC, computer vs. laptop), which file was downloaded (Mac Silicon, Mac Intel, or Windows MSI), attaching the "Setup log" for Windows computer if applicable, any details of what the error message said, and screenshots.
