With the increased use of generative AI, we now require lockdown browsers to be installed and remote proctoring to be used for any remote testing to ensure test security and accurate student results.
If your students are using institution-distributed Chromebooks, iPads, or other tablets, or if students have their own tablets, please contact support@cae.org or submit a new support ticket for an alternate process.
CAE has video meeting integration with our lockdown browser for free-of-charge remote proctoring.
Students should have the video meeting software pre-installed, and there will be a single proctor for the entire group of students. During the exam period, the proctor monitors students via the meeting to answer any questions and ensure that students do not get distracted. Institutions that use this remote proctoring provide their own proctors.
CAE recommends meetings of no more than 25 students so that proctors are able to adequately monitor the students.
Two example options are Zoom and WebEx. Zoom can be downloaded at zoom.us/download, and WebEx can be downloaded at www.webex.com/downloads.html.
The process for Remote Proctoring is as follows, using Zoom as an example:
-
IN ADVANCE, PRE-TESTING PREPARATION
- Schedule a meeting and invite all attendees. This could be a classroom, a cohort, or a random sample that has signed up for a specific time.
- If applicable, have students download the lockdown browser and ensure that it opens to the welcome screen asking for the test code. Any background software or out of date browser versions may inhibit the lockdown browser from functioning.
-
IMMEDIATELY BEFORE TESTING
- Have all students join the Zoom Meeting, turning their cameras and audio on. Once students open the lockdown browser, they will not be able to mute/unmute themselves so audio must stay on.
- Ensure that everyone has their camera on in order to confirm identity.
- Once all students or relevant candidates are in the Zoom Meeting, share the Test Code.
- Suggest that the students record the Test Session Number on a piece of paper, as the Zoom Chat function will no longer be accessible upon the launch of the lockdown browser.
- Have students launch the lockdown browser and use the Test Code to access the exam.
-
DURING TESTING
- Follow the students or relevant candidates through the exam using the Proctor Dashboard.
-
POST TESTING
- Ensure that students or relevant candidates destroy any materials such as scrap paper or notes that they used throughout the exam.
